And The Pic Of The Week

The things that bakers can do with cakes always amazes me. 1 foot tall cake with wafer paper tutu, fondant body and airbrushed wood.

Instead of the buttons streamlining the back, how about a change of pace and let them be seen from the side view. Nice.

Seating Chart Mania

What to do about seating your guests is always an issue when planning a wedding.  It's time consuming and many couples dread the task.  So often the question has come up, "do we really need a seating chart?"  I give my couples two choices, open seating with reserved tables or assign your guests to tables.

If you choose not to have assigned seating at least have reserved signs on tables for your immediate family and special guests.  In some cases you may not have the traditional bridal party set up so make sure you have reserved tables labeled "Bridal Party".

When choosing assigned seating keep these tips in mind.

1. Assigned seating gives your reception a formal atmosphere so if you are not looking for a casual look, assign those seats.

2. It assures that your tables are full.  You know exactly who will be attending and know where to place them.

3. Assigning your guests to table also keeps down the drama.  Only you know which family members or friends don't see eye to eye so if you're going to invite them you'll know not to sit them together.

4. When deciding who will sit where make sure to put guests with similarities at the same table. This will make sure the conversation flows and your guests are not bored.

Whichever you decide, assigned seating or not, it is definitely something you need to discuss with your planner and each other.

CSW Article: Jumping the Broom: A Modern Take on an Old Tradition

I was asked by Chicago Style Weddings to share some photos from my last wedding.  Well, when they saw the photo of the "broom" they asked me to share the story behind it and this is what we have.

Jumping the Broom: A Modern Take on an Old Tradition

GUEST POST BY DENIA WILLIAMS, OWNER OF FROM YOUR INSPIRATION WEDDING AND EVENT MANAGEMENT

“Jumping the Broom” is an African American wedding tradition included at the end of the ceremony, after the officiant has pronounced the couple husband and wife or at the reception after the entire bridal party has entered. The significance of this tradition is to pay homage to those that came before us during times of slavery. At that time, slaves were not allowed to legally get married so they legitimized their marriage by jumping the broom; leaving their former single lives and jumping into a new journey as husband and wife.

This particular couple wanted to jump the broom; however, they did not want the traditional decorated broom. The wedding planner decided to create this design for the couple to jump over. It was perfect for the wedding day and they can hang it on their wall or they can add a stand and place it on the mantle. It's the perfect reminder of their love, commitment and heritage.

Your Backyard Soiree - Save Your Cash and Use What You Have

Whenever we decide to have a party in our home or a backyard BBQ the first thing we do is run to the party store.  Sometimes, if you look around, you can use what's right in front of your nose. I'm not saying you won't have to go to the store for a few things but here are a few ways you can put some cash back in your pockets.

Now, Let's Get Inspired!

We all have paper bags - pack your flatware & napkins neatly in your bags,
use a flatware stamp and your choice of ribbon.  Visit Catch My Party for instructions.

Collect all that leftover ribbon you have and lay them across the table in contrasting colors.
If you like lay a white tablecloth down as a background color.

Take those ho-hum folding chairs out of the garage and paint them.
This is an easy and fun family project that can be done outdoors.

Save your ice for the cocktails.  Fill balloons with water and freeze.
This looks more festive and when the balloons begin to deflate just put them back in the freezer.
